Betty Walker, 84, of Sioux City, passed away Wednesday, March 23, 2016, at a nursing home.
Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Morningside Baptist Church. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to services Tuesday at the church. Arrangements are with Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith.
Betty was born Nov. 23, 1931, in Gibsonville, N.C., to George and Bessie (Lane) Oxendine. She graduated from Washington Lee High School, and from Cumberland College with a degree in nursing. Betty worked at the Pentagon for four years.
Betty married Walter Walker on June 1, 1952, in Arlington, Va. They worked in the mission field for five years.
Upon returning to Sioux City, she worked at Greenberg's Jewelry, Bellas Hess and Zenith. She went back to school at Western Iowa Tech, receiving a degree in computer programming. Betty worked as a computer programmer for the city of Sioux City for more than 10 years.
She was a member of Morningside Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school, was in the choir, and worked as a secretary.
Survivors include her brother, Neil Oxendine of Philadelphia, Pa.; three sons, Nathanael Walker of Sandy, Utah, Samuel (Joan) Walker of Sioux City, and Daniel Walker of Tucson, Ariz.; two grandchildren, Jennifer Walker and Matthew Walker; and a great-grandchild, Donlynn Walker.
She was preceded in death by her parents; five brothers, Lester, Raymond, George, Clarence and Sherman Oxendine; and three sisters, Violet Walker, Mildred Cantrell and Lois Thwaite.
