Janice Jeannine Strickland was born January 7, 1933, in Gettysburg, SD to Russell and Ruth (Keller) Strickland. She attended Gettysburg public school and graduated from Gettysburg High School in 1951. Following high school, she attended Iowa State College where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics Education in 1953. She then taught one year at Waynesville, MO High School, and later was a substitute teacher in the Jefferson, IA school system.
On December 26, 1954, she was united in marriage with Thomas E. De Witte in Gettysburg, SD. After completing her degree at Iowa State in May 1955, she moved to Fort Leonard, MO to join Tom. In June 1956, they moved to Madison, WI where Tom was in Graduate School and she worked as a dental assistant. In June 1957, they moved to Des Moines, IA, where they celebrated the arrival of their first child, Daniel. In September 1959, they moved to Macon, MO where they celebrated the arrival of their second child, John. Their next move was in 1962 when they moved to Ottumwa, IA. Jan continued in her role as a homemaker and they welcomed the arrival of their third child, Diane in 1964. In 1966, the Iowa Highway Commission transferred Tom to Jefferson, IA. Tom was transferred to Sioux City in 1972, and there, Jan began working part time as a clerk in a quilting shop and developed a real interest in quilting. This led to 25 years of teaching adult education sewing classes at Western Iowa Tech Community College.
Jan was a 50-year member of Grace United Methodist Church in Sioux City. She was an active member of PEO Chapter DX, Miercoles Study Club, and she enjoyed playing bridge, reading, and traveling.
Grateful for having the opportunity to share their lives with Jan are her husband Tom; sons Daniel (Sheryl), Rosemont, MN; John (Vicki), Mitchell, SD; daughter Diane (Scott), Omaha, NE; 7 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; and brother Jim (Donna), Eugene, OR.
