SIOUX CITY -- Victor F. Lahn, 79, of Sioux City died Friday, June 25, 2010, at Countryside Retirement Center in Sioux City.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Redeemer Lutheran Church, with the Revs. Russell Senstad and David Zirpel officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home.
Victor was born Feb. 11, 1931, at Belle Plaine, Iowa, the son of Alfred and Evelyn (Johnson) Lahn. He graduated from Belle Plaine High School in 1949. He then entered the U.S. Army and served two years during the Korean conflict. After his discharge, he attended the University of Iowa, studying aeronautical engineering.
Victor had learned to fly at age 17, so he began his aviation career in 1955, working as a charter pilot/instructor for seven years for Wathan Flying Service in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He then was a corporate pilot for Shaeffer Pen Company in Fort Madison, Iowa, from 1962 to 1967. He completed his career at MidAmerican Energy (Iowa Public Service Company) in Sioux City, as a corporate pilot for 28 years, retiring in 1995. He loved flying, working with his fellow pilots and serving his co-workers.
He married Donna Mae Newton on June 7, 1953, at Grace Lutheran Church in Blairstown, Iowa. He was an active member of Redeemer Lutheran Church. Victor's hobbies included fishing, hunting, skiing, reading, cooking and traveling, which he enjoyed sharing with family and friends.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Donna; two sons, James of Hinton, Iowa, and David of Sioux City; five grandchildren, Lauren Lahn of Denver, Colo., Elliot (Jennifer) Lahn of Olathe, Kan., Zachary Lahn and his fiancee, Lauren Stephens of Fort Collins, Colo., Kathryn Lahn of St. Bonifacius, Minn., and Scott Lahn of Sioux City; one great-grandson, Hunter Lahn of Olathe; his brother, John (Beverly) Lahn of Kissimmee, Fla.; his sister-in-law, Jean Lahn of Bay Shore, Long Island, N.Y.; his mother-in-law, Neoma Newton of Blairstown, Iowa; his in-laws, Wayne (Nancy) Newton in Blairstown, Char (Bill) Majewsky of Huntington Beach, Calif., and Marvin (Carole) Newton of Solvang, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Roger J. Lahn.
The family suggests memorials to Redeemer Lutheran Church.
