A. Lee Close

DAKOTA DUNES -- A. Lee Close, 83, of Dakota Dunes died Thursday, March 3, 2011, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the First Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Matthew Miller officiating. Burial will be in Logan Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home.
Lee was born on May 6, 1927, in Cleveland, Ohio, to Garth B. and Hulda J. Close. He was raised in Cleveland and graduated from University School in Cleveland. He attended and graduated from Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Va. After college he served in the U.S. Army MASH Service Unit during the Korean War as a medic. After leaving the service he went to work for the Merrell National Pharmaceutical Company.
On Aug. 1, 1953, he married Shirley Brennan. The couple moved to Sioux City in 1957, where they raised their two children. Shirley died on July 19, 1973. Lee continued to work for the Merrell-Dow Pharmaceutical Company until he retired in 1990. On June 15, 1975, Lee married Gladys Heffelfinger in the First Presbyterian Church in Sioux City. After he retired, Lee and Gladys enjoyed traveling the country in their RV, spending most of their winters in the Southwest.
He was a member of Rotary International and the Siouxland Gem and Mineral Society. But what he loved most was spending time with his family, wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Lee is survived by his wife Gladys of Dakota Dunes; a daughter and her husband, Leslie and Jim Davis of Sioux City; a daughter and her husband, Lori Heffelfinger and James Jackman of Redondo Beach, Calif.; a son and his wife, Grant Heffelfinger and Candace of Cedar Crest, N.M.; six grandchildren, Erica and Kyle Bonstead, Mark and Dijon Davis, Andrea Davis, Alexander, Audrey and Ainslee Heffelfinger; two great-grandchildren, Keegan and Breckan Bonstead; and his brother, Jared Close.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife; and his son, Garth A. Close.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in memory of Garth A. Close to the Pancreatic Cancer Research Center at Johns Hopkins University ( http://pathology.jhu.edu/pc/support.php ).
