Ada Elizabeth Svoboda (Avery)

Ada Elizabeth Svoboda, 72, of Sioux City passed away Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008, at a Sioux City hospital, following a brief illness.

Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Homes, with Bishop Cliff Wilkinson of the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-Day Saints officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation with the family present will be 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Ada was born on March 4, 1936, in Sioux City, the daughter of George and Fern (Peck) Avery. She attended Crescent Park Elementary School, Central High School and proved it was never too late; she attained her G.E.D. in 1998.

She married Richard J. Svoboda on Aug. 4, 1964, in Wahoo, Neb. She lived most of her life in Sioux City. Ada was a homemaker and housewife. She also worked for M.C.I. in the customer service department. She retired in 1996.

Ada enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She was always there to help and take care of those who needed her. Family was very important to her, and she made sure she kept in touch with everyone, and we mean everyone. Our mother will be deeply missed by all. She was everyone's mom or grandma.

Ada liked sitting out on the porch surrounded by her wind chimes. She loved reading and always encouraged others to read. She was a very talented embroiderer, seamstress and crocheter. She enjoyed her computer and meeting new people while playing her online games. She enjoyed talking on the phone. She loved to fish and her WWE.

Survivors include her husband, Richard Svoboda of Sioux City; four children, Melvin L. Svoboda of Iowa, Deborah Packard and her husband, Robert of Bronson, Iowa, Todd Svoboda and his wife, Denise of Elliott, Iowa, and Bernard Svoboda of Sioux City; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two sisters, Betty Jean Avery of Missouri, and Mary Jane Avery of Illinois; a brother, Leonard Avery of Colorado; a lifelong friend, Sharon Iba of Sioux City; a cousin, Vernon "Bud" Peck of Sioux City; two beloved dogs, Maggie and Sandy; and one ornery cat named Ash.

She was preceded in death by a great-grandson, Daniel; her father, George Avery; her grandmother, Elizabeth S. Avery, who raised her; her uncle, Sam Avery; and her mother, Fern.

Pallbearers will be Jerry O'Dell, George Venhaus, Tim Bock, Wayne Ralston, Joe Venhaus and Dan Ruring.
