SIOUX CITY -- Gene Alan Southwell, 56, of Sioux City died Sunday, Sept. 18, 2011, at a family's residence in Sioux City following a courageous battle with cancer.
Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Riverside United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Tanya Sherrill officiating. Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Thursday in Lyons Cemetery, Lyons, Neb. Visitation will be 3:30 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Berkemier Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home.
Gene was born June 21, 1955, in Harlan, Iowa, to Dale and Celia (Cates) Southwell. Shortly after his birth, the family moved to Sioux City, where he had been a lifelong resident. He attended Sioux City schools and graduated from West High School in 1973. He later attended Western Iowa Tech Community College. He was employed with Sioux City Foundry for 35 plus years, starting as a draftsman and advancing later to steel estimator.
He was of the Methodist faith. He enjoyed watching sports, especially the Minnesota Vikings and Twins and the Iowa State Cyclones.
Survivors include his mother, Celia Southwell of Sioux City; a brother, Mel Southwell of Sioux City; a sister, Patty and Brian Jenness of Sauk Rapids, Minn.; five nieces and nephews, Stephanie and Josh Mitrisin of Oskaloosa, Iowa, Scott and Stephanie Southwell of Harrisville, Utah, Justin and Heather Jenness of San Diego, Calif., Aaron Jenness of Sauk Rapids, and Brooke Jenness of Sauk Rapids; and a grandnephew and grandniece, Jacob Mitrisin and Charlotte Jenness.
He was preceded in death by his father; a sister-in-law, Heidi Southwell; and his grandparents.
