Alice Elvera Orr (Erickson)

SIOUX CITY -- Alice Elvera (Erickson) Clarstrom Orr, 99, formerly of Sioux City died Friday, Aug. 21, 2009, at a Coon Rapids, Minn., care center.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home in Sioux City. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, immediately followed by a reception at Christy-Smith Community Room. Visitation will be 9 a.m. until service time Saturday at the funeral home. Alice was born June 22, 1910, in Beresford, S.D., to Swedish immigrants, Ida S. Messler and Gustav T. Erickson. She attended Newdale Country School and Vermillion (S.D.) High School, where she graduated in 1927. She moved to Sioux City in 1929 and attended the Lutheran School of Nursing, where she graduated with the class of 1932.

She married Carl Gustav Clarstrom on June 22, 1938, at Trinity Lutheran Church. They made their home in Sioux City, raising their children, Ronald and Janice, until Carl's death in 1964. She worked as a registered nurse at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital until her retirement in 1975 as supervisor of the OB/GYN.

She married Roland "Bud" Orr on Feb. 23, 1980, at the Glass and Garden Church in Scottsdale, Ariz. They traveled between their homes in Vermillion, S.D., and Mesa, Ariz. until Bud's death in 1986. She continued spending winters in Mesa and summers in Vermillion until the mid 1990s, when she moved to Clearwater, Fla., to live with her daughter, Janice until her death in 2004. She then relocated to the Walker Plaza in Anoka, Minn., and later Park River Estates in Coon Rapids, Minn.

She is survived by her son, Ronald (Sandy) Clarstrom of Andover, Minn.; two grandchildren, Ann Damask of Waukesha, Wis., and Mark (Beth) Clarstrom of Andover; four great-grandchildren, Lilian, Cassandra and Laurie Clarstrom and Aiden Clarstrom; a sister, Louise Eklund of Council Bluffs, Iowa; several nieces; two nephews; two stepsons, Franklin (Gwen) Orr and Ronald (Beverly) Orr; two stepdaughters, Sally (Ralph) Westergaard and Mary Ellen (Todd) Brevik; and numerous step-grandchildren and great-step-grandchildren from the Volin, Burbank and Vermillion, S.D. area.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Carl Clarstrom and Bud Orr; a daughter, Janice Clarstrom; and sisters, Ruth Weber and Mabel Erickson.

Memorials in her name may be directed to the American Cancer Society.

Alice was a loving, caring, kind and gentle lady with a contagious smile. She will be deeply missed.
