Allen was born on July 14, 1942, in Wahoo, NE. He was the son of Peter and Fama (Gunsolley) Kern. Al grew up in Moville, IA, and graduated from Moville High School. Allen married Ruth (Groves) on June 3, 1961, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Sioux City. Allen worked as a salesman for M&M Mars, retiring in 2000. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. As a couple, Allen and Ruth enjoyed traveling all over the United States – he was known for wandering off and finding either new friends or someone he knew no matter where in the country he was. The other most important part of their life was going to their grandchildren’s activities, whether it was sport or other activities. Allen and Ruth were quite generous to the time spent and donations to the community.
Allen is survived by his daughter, Tracy (Scott) Meadows of Lake Crystal, MN; his son, Troy (Cara) Kern of Sioux City; 5 grandchildren, Spenser (Katie) and Colin (Aurora) Meadows, Hayli (Luke) DeJong, Chase (Matti) and Ariel Kern (Jacob Wiley); great grandson, Aemon DeJong; two great grandchildren soon to be born; his sister, Patricia (Leon) Yoeger; his favorite aunt, Wanda Gunsolley; and many nieces and nephews.
Allen was preceded in death by his beloved wife, his parents, and in-laws.
In lieu of flowers, in memorial for his love of East High Basketball please send donations to Rich Vanderloo Foundation (6562 Kings Barn Ct., Sioux City, IA, 51106).
