Allen R. Millar, 93, of Sioux City passed away Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2016, at Sunrise Retirement Community.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home, led by a Masonic service. Interment will be in Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, S.D. Visitation will be 9:30 a.m. until service time Saturday at the funeral home.
Allen was born on Dec. 5, 1922, in Ravinia, S.D., to George and Beulah (Wilhelm) Millar. He graduated from Bennett County High School in Martin, S.D. He graduated college from Chadron State in Nebraska, and earned his master's from Greeley State in Greeley, Colo. He earned his doctorate from University of Nebraska, Lincoln, with a degree in education administration.
Allen served as college president in South Dakota for 10 years at Southern State College and Dakota State. Allen served in the U.S. Army in World War II. He was involved in the Battle of the Bulge, the Conquest of Europe, and Occupation of Japan. Allen was a first lieutenant, company commander, with the Army Combat Engineers.
He was united in marriage to Edith C. Andrews on Dec. 22, 1943, in Bend, Ore. They made their home in Chadron, Neb. Over the years, they lived in Lincoln, Neb, Mankato, Minn., Springfield and Madison, S.D., McCook, Neb., Omaha, and then to Sioux City.
Allen was involved in the Masonic Lodge, where he actively participated in the Blue Lodge, the York Rite, Scottish Rite, Knights Templars and the Shriner's. He enjoyed reading and spending time with family.
Those left to honor his memory include his son, Tom (Kathy) Millar of Sioux City; daughter, Carolyn Perry of Wenachee, Wash.; three grandchildren, Matthew Millar, Heidi Millar, and Adam Krausman; two brothers, Ward Millar of Rapid City, S.D., and Dan Millar of Burbank, Wash.; and a sister, Beulah Millar of Lakewood, Colo.
He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Edith; and brothers, Howard, John, Arnold, and Lawrence.
Memorials may be made to the family for distribution to veterans organizations.
