Alma Jane. Sorensen, 87, of McCook Lake, died Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2017, surrounded by her family.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. today at Good News Baptist Church, 3200 W. 19th St., Sioux City, with Pastor John Woodford officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in Sioux City. Alma was born Jan. 30, 1930, in Sioux City, to Clyde and Margaret (Koschine) Nation. She was raised in Elk Point, S.D., graduating in 1943 from Elk Point High School. Alma attended college in Casper, Wyo., before moving back to the Elk Point area.
She married Bert "Guy" Welch on Jan 16, 1947, in Elk Point. They had seven children, Dawn, Norma, Pam, Ricke, Dennis, Susie and Patrick. Bert died Dec. 13, 1991.
Alma married Merville "Andy" Sorensen in 2006. He passed away Jan. 18, 2015.
During her working career, she was employed with Walgreens as a competitive shopper, St. Luke's Hospital as a surgery tech, and later as a sign language interpreter for Sioux City schools, local hospitals and the court system.
Alma was a former member of Central Assembly of God Church and Southern Hills Baptist Church.
Survivors include her sons, Dennis (Kathy) Welch of Hubbard, Neb., and Patrick (Markie) Welch of Sioux City; daughters, Dawn (Ness) Bashara of Omaha, Neb., Norma Cotter of South Sioux City, Pam (Dwight) Boetger of McCook Lake, Ricke (Bill) Sloan of Sioux City and Susie Welch of Sioux City; four step-children, Sandra Raisbeck of Loveland, Colo., Debra Mellott of Phoenix, Ariz., Bradley Sorensen of Phoenix and Brian Sorensen of Farmington, N.M.; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
