Annetta Marie Olsen (Gartner)

May 6, 1915 — June 30, 2009

SIOUX CITY -- Annetta M. Olsen, 94, of South Sioux City, formerly of Sioux City, passed away Tuesday, June 30, 2009, at Regency Square Care Center in South Sioux City following a brief illness.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Third Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home.

Annetta was born May 6, 1915, on a farm in Coleridge, Neb., the daughter of George and Lizzie (Frerichs) Gartner. Her mother died when she was 9, leaving her to do much of the housework. She had to quit school after completing the eighth grade.

On April 5, 1937, she married Arthur C. Olsen in Norfolk, Neb. They moved to Sioux City in 1942. From 1945 to 1966, they lived on Court Street. At that time, they were members of First Covenant Church. In 1966, they moved to Morningside, where they lived until 2002, when they moved to Regency Courte Assisted Living in South Sioux City. Her husband preceded her in death on March 31, 2009, after 72 years of marriage.

She was a busy housewife, who spent many hours entertaining and cooking for family and friends. She was involved in the Floyd School PTA, was a Cub Scout leader and taught Bible School. She loved gardening and enjoyed fishing vacations. She especially enjoyed visiting her younger sister, who had been raised by an aunt in California. In later years, she and her husband bowled in the Sioux City Senior Citizens Bowling League. Her most joy came from time spent with her children and grandchildren.

She was a member of Third Presbyterian Church and the church's women's organizations. She served three terms on the Deaconess board.

Left with many loving memories are her daughter and her husband, Alice and Gary Hacker of Sioux City; grandchildren, Gene and Sandra Hacker of Sioux City, Chris and Tina Hacker of Woodbury, Minn., Mark and Katie Olsen of Bowie, Md., and Steff (Olsen) and James V. Jay of Aledo, Texas; nine great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Dale Cushman of Port Angeles, Wash.; a half brother, George Gartner of Sloan, Iowa; a half sister, Frieda Brown of Norfolk, Neb.; a sister-in-law, Betty Schaeffer of Hartington, Neb.; many nieces and nephews; and many dear friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her son, Allen in 1999; a brother, Ted Gartner; and two sisters, Alice Hefti and Betty Cushman.

The family requests memorials be directed to Third Presbyterian Church or Hospice of Siouxland.
