Anton Leo Getz, 89, passed away on Friday, March 14, 2025, at a local nursing home in South Sioux City, Nebraska.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, March 20, 2025, from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Christy-Smith Funeral Homes, Morningside Chapel (1801 Morningside Ave). Funeral service will be held on Friday, March 21, 2025, at 10:30 am at Christy-Smith Funeral Homes, Morningside Chapel. His final resting place will be Memorial Park Cemetery.
Anton was born on June 21, 1935, to Joseph and Mary Ann (Holtzer) Getz in Strasburg, North Dakota. He was one of nine children. He attended school and spent his early adult years in Strasburg.
On October 7, 1963, Anton married Joyce Elaine Allen at the Cathedral of the Epiphany in Sioux City, Iowa. The couple had 4 sons: Greg, Tony, Mike, and Timothy. Anton and Joyce spent almost 50 years together before Joyce’s passing on February 26, 2013.
Anton was a strong worker. He was a mechanic for 30 years, using his skills in the Siouxland area at Armor Star, Meyer Towing, H+I Grain, and Diesel Maintenance (later Siouxland Mack). In 1998, Anton and Joyce moved to Sloan, where Anton retired from being a mechanic in 2000. However, Anton enjoyed being around people, so he returned to the workforce and found employment at WinnaVegas Casino Resort, where he worked for another 10 years before finally retiring in 2010. Anton later moved to South Sioux City, Nebraska, in September 2024.
In his spare time, Anton enjoyed fishing, traveling, horseshoes and gambling, but what he loved the most was spending time with his grandkids. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Salix, IA.
Anton is survived by his sons, Greg Getz of Sergeant Bluff, Iowa, Joe “Tony” (Dawn) Getz of South Sioux City, Nebraska, and Mike (Bob Booth) Getz of Goodyear, Arizona; 4 grandchildren, Nate, Ryan, Jared, and Colt; 2 great-grandchildren, Ava and Addi; and sister, Margaret Fiest.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Mary Ann; wife, Joyce; son, Timothy Getz; sisters, Adeline Boline, Annamary (John) Faith, and Helen Vetter; and brothers, Pius (Regena) Getz, Eugene (Irene) Getz, John Getz, Joseph Jr. Getz, and infant Joseph Getz.
