SIOUX CITY -- Arlene Marie Nielsen, 82, of Sioux City died peacefully at her home on Friday, Feb. 11, 2011.
There will be no services. Internment will be Thursday in Beaver Grove Cemetery, near New Hartford, Iowa. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Berkemier Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Homes.
Arlene was born on Dec. 9, 1928, at Albion, Iowa, the daughter of Cecil and Lena (Rivers) Bolton. She was raised in the Parkersburg, Iowa, area, attending schools there and graduating from Parkersburg High School. She then lived in Sac City, Iowa, and Sioux City a few years.
On July 12, 1947, she married Gerald Nielsen. The couple lived in eastern Iowa several years prior to moving to Sioux City. Gerald died on Aug. 12, 1973. In 1980, Arlene moved to Omaha, where she resided until her health forced her to move back to Sioux City in 2009, to be near her son.
She had been a former member of Redeemer Lutheran Church while in Sioux City. She had been a foster parent for more than 300 foster babies and more than 40 foster children. She loved to collect antiques and dolls. She loved all animals, especially cats, as well as spending time with her family and all of her grandchildren.
The family wishes to recognize the special care and love of Deb Carpenter and the other caregivers over the past two years.
She is survived by a son, Dan Nielsen and his friend, Monica Swords of Sioux City; four grandchildren, Andria and Bart Sivill of South Sioux City, Danielle and Brock Seim of Johnston, Iowa, Amber Nielsen of Washington, D.C., and Christie Knowles Novak of Buffalo, N.Y.; three great-grandchildren, Austin, Kamaray and Kaden; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and eight brothers and sisters.
The family suggests memorials to the Humane Society of the donor's choice.
