Arlene Ruberg, 94, of Moville died Tuesday, June 14, 2016, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Moville, with the Rev. Barb Spaulding officiating. Burial will be in Arlington Township Cemetery, Moville. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. today, with family present 5 to 7 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., all at Trinity Lutheran Church. Arrangements are under the direction of McCulloch Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Homes in Moville.
Arlene, the daughter of Emil and Anna (Beermann) Bruns, was born on Feb. 18, 1922, in Denison, Iowa. Arlene was a longtime resident of Moville, where she had lived since 1953. She graduated from Denison High School in 1939, continued her education at Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, Iowa. She then taught grades K-8 in a one-room schoolhouse for two years before joining her husband at naval bases in Pennsylvania, Mississippi and Texas during World War II. She subsequently lived in Denison and Storm Lake for several years before relocating to Moville, where she helped her husband operate variety stores which they owned in Moville, Kingsley, Anthon, and Correctionville, Iowa.
Arlene loved church activities, reading and travel. She was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church and its women's circle. She taught Sunday School as well as Vacation Bible School for many years. She was active in the Moville women's club, American Legion Auxiliary, Meadows Golf Club, Moville Sewing Club and served as a Cub Scout den mother for numerous years.
Survivors include her husband, Ray Ruberg of Moville; three children, Ron (Jan) Ruberg of Thornton, Colo., Barb (Mark) Kuchel of Kingsley, Iowa, and Ken (Michal Baird) Ruberg of Crofton, Md.; six grandchildren, Stephanie (Terry) Pratt, Chad (Darcy) Kuchel, Lauren (Nick) Burgoyne, Adam (Kelly) Ruberg, Kate (Kevin) Fulbright and Emma Ruberg; three stepgrandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two great-stepgrandchildren; sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, Betty Griffin of Denison, Jean Jensen of Audubon, Iowa, and Dorothy (Keith) Jensen of Irwin, Iowa; nieces and nephews; and special friends, Rowdy and Lorraine Henning of Moville.
Arlene was preceded in death by her parents; an infant daughter, Carol Jean; brother, Leonard Bruns; a sister, Leora Neumann; and niece, Robin Rogers.
