Arlene Schumann

April 8, 1927 — August 22, 2017

Arlene Schumann, 90, of Correctionville, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2017, at Care Initiatives in Correctionville.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. John Lutheran Church in Climbing Hill, Iowa, with the Rev. David Schoop officiating. Burial will be in Westfork Township Cemetery, Climbing Hill. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Homes, 1801 Morningside Ave., in Sioux City. Arlene Alice Mathilda Hesse Schumann was born on April 8, 1927, in Dunlap Iowa, the daughter of William Walter Hesse and Ethel Belle (Carlson) Hesse. She attended rural Anthon (Iowa) grade school and graduated from high school in Anthon in 1945. During her high school years, she clerked at the local grocery store in Anthon and was also a bookkeeper at the John Deere Co. in Anthon.
On Sept. 23, 1945, she married Verlin Fred Schumann. They farmed in the Anthon area until 1955, when they moved to Orange, Calif. for a few years. They returned to Sioux City in 1958 becoming members of St Paul's Lutheran Church. In 1964, they managed the Elmdale Motel in Sioux City, then in 1970 they moved to Salix, Iowa. Arlene worked for Tupperware and Otis Elevator in Sioux City. Upon Verlin's passing in 1986, Arlene moved to Sioux City. She married William Gregg Snyder in 1991 and moved to Alton, Iowa until 2007. They enjoyed camping and golfing until Gregg's passing. She then moved to Moville, Iowa. Arlene enjoyed being a homemaker and caring for her family. She was self-taught at many crafts, crocheting, knitting, tatting, counted cross stitch, and embroidery to name a few.
Arlene and Verlin were parents to Darwin Dale (Kathryn) Schumann of Valley Center, Kan., DeLloyd Wayne Schumann, Marilyn Jolene (Roger) Tyler of Mattoon, Ill., and Veryl Dean (Glenda) Schumann of Niceville, Fla.
Grandmother to Shelley (Friedhelm) Otto of Omaha, Angela (Hardy) Frey of Oak Creek, Wis., Leigh (Geoff) Skorupskus of Chicago, Ill., Craig (Lisa) Tyler of Chicago, Sara (Keith) Weaver of Greenfield, Ind., Randy (Amanda) Schumann of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., Tanya Schumann of Crestview, Fla., and Jason Schumann of Niceville. Great-grandmother to Jessica Tibbott, Brandon Tibbott, Alexandria Otto, Julia (Frey) Smith, Aaron Frey, Hannah Frey, Erick Frey, Hannah Erdos, Verlin Erdos, Aras Skorupskus, Andrius Skorupskus and Quintus Anderson. Great-great-grandmother to Rowan Jason Alexander Spitler, and Easton Cyril Smith. Aunt to many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; infant son, DeLloyd Schumann; first husband, Verlin Schumann; sister-in-law, Velda Schumann; second husband, Gregg Snyder; brother, Alvie Hesse; sister-in-law, Alta Hesse; sister-in-law, Ruth Hesse; brother-in-law, Dale Behrens; nephew, Dennis Behrens; nephew, Keith Hesse; brother-in-law, Kenneth Kleihauer.
In lieu of flowers, a donation in Arlene's name may be made to St. John Lutheran Church, P.O.Box 68, Climbing Hill, IA 51015.
