Arnold L. Friis, 83, of Sioux City passed away Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2008, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Terry Embke of Morningside Bible Church officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 3:30 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.
Arnold was born in Tyler, Minn., to Arthur and Anna (Anderson) Friis. He moved with his family as a young child to Marathon, Iowa, where he grew up and attended school. He later attended Morningside College. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
On Valentine's Day, Feb. 14, 1948, he married Hazel L. Nattress in Sioux City. They lived in California for a few years, then returned to Sioux City in 1953, where he had resided ever since. He worked as a surveyor for the Highway Commission.
He was a 30-plus year member of First Church of the Nazarene, where he was very active in the church activities. He was well known for telling jokes and making people smile and laugh. He was a Volunteer of the Year via the Iowa Health Care Association in 1998.
Survivors include his wife, Hazel of Sioux City; a daughter, Sue and Max Jordan of Sioux City; three grandchildren, Chad and Shelli Jordan, Heather Tranmer and Shauna and Ken Hagestrom, all of Sioux City; four great-grandchildren, Mikai, Alivia, Kassandra and Devin, all of Sioux City; two brothers, Eldon and Betty Friis of Des Moines and Roger and Dorothy Friis of Sandy, Utah; and a sister, Frances Schnieder of Kenosha, Wis.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Gene Friis.
