HINTON, Iowa -- Arthur James Flannery, 88, of Sioux City, formerly of Hinton, died Saturday, Feb. 19, 2011, at Countryside Retirement Center in Sioux City.
Services will be 7 p.m. today at Larkin Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Jason Larson officiating. Burial will be in Liberty Township Cemetery, Hinton, Iowa. Arthur was born Dec. 2, 1922, in Sioux City, the son of William and Annie (Kovarna) Flannery. He attended Sioux City Public Schools, graduating from Central High School. After graduation, Art worked as a carpenter before becoming a farmer and cattle feeder.
He married Annette "Toni" Koopman on Nov. 28, 1952, in Sibley, Iowa during a blizzard. They made their home in rural Hinton, where they raised their three sons. Toni died on May 16, 2009.
As a youngster, Art was a Sioux City marble champion. He played pro softball and enjoyed performing water sports and yo-yo tricks. Art and Toni had been members of the Cristal Ribbon Dance Club. They also had traveled to 49 states and Cuba.
Survivors include three sons, Joe and Becki Flannery and Jack and Julie Flannery, all of Hinton, and Mike and Dana Flannery of Sioux City; three grandchildren, Kate (Dan) Fitzpatrick, Megan Flannery and Pat Flannery; and a brother, Thomas and Genevieve Flannery of Hinton.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Toni.
