SIOUX CITY -- Barry D. Nelson, 65, of Sioux City died Monday, Sept. 12, 2011, at a Sioux City hospital after a six-year battle with pulmonary fibrosis.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Southern Hills Baptist Church, with the Rev. David Miller officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Barry was born May 20, 1946, in Algona, Iowa, to Herbert L. and Leola J. (Michaelson) Nelson. He grew up in Titonka, Iowa, and went to high school in Lone Rock, Iowa. The family moved to Sedalia, Mo., in 1963, and he graduated from Sedalia High School in 1964.
Barry moved to Sioux City in 1966 and later met Julie Wilcox. The couple wed Oct. 7, 1967, in Sioux City. That same year Barry started working for the Dictaphone Corporation as an electronic technician and worked for the company for 38 years. In 2005, he went to work for CompuCom as a technician, retiring in May 2010.
He was a member of Billy Sunday Memorial Tabernacle until 1997 when he joined Southern Hills Baptist Church. He taught Sunday school and AWANA, and served on the properties committee. Barry loved softball -- he played, coached and umpired for over 40 years in several recreational and church leagues.
Survivors include his wife, Julie Nelson of Sioux City; his daughter, Sheila (Jeff) Wilkerson of Sioux City; his sons, Maj. Kurt (Pam) Nelson of Heidelberg, Germany, Kyle (Kristin) Nelson of Sioux City, Shawn (Andrea) Nelson of Dakota Dunes, and Justain Nelson of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; brothers, Arden (Shirley) Nelson of Sarasota, Fla., Randy (Myrt) Nelson of Raymore, Mo., and Kevin (Janie) Nelson of Sioux City; sisters, Linda (Tracy) Stone of Holt, Mo., and Holly (Gary) Dominick of Sioux City; eight grandchildren, Teagan and Nikki Wilkerson and Trent Wilkerson, all of Sioux City, Hope Nelson of Mason, Ohio, Jonathan Nelson of Heidelberg, and Mychaela, Kaitlyn and Jaxon Nelson of Dakota Dunes; and three stepgrandchildren, Nate, Josh and Alex Hair of Sioux City.
He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant brother, Michael Nelson.
