Ben J. Bernard, 82, of Burbank, S.D., formerly of Sioux City, died Wednesday, March 5, 2008, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Jefferson, S.D., with the Rev. David Roerich officiating. Burial will be in St. Peter's Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Christy-Smith Larkin Chapel in Sioux City. Ben was born May 14, 1925, in Jefferson, S.D., the son of Phillip and Florence (Bernard) Bernard. He was raised in Jefferson and attended Jefferson High School, graduating in 1943. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1944 and served until 1946.
He married Bonnie V. Wenther on Oct. 3, 1944, in Jackson, Neb. She died on May 23, 1985, in Sioux City. He married Patricia (Peterson) O'Keefe on Sept. 26, 1986, in Sioux City.
The couple moved to Sioux City in 1946 after he left the service. He had a welding and repair shop in North Sioux City. In 1950, he joined the Sioux City Police Department. He became a sergeant in January 1959 and a lieutenant in January 1966. He made captain in August 1968 and was in charge of the Youth Bureau. He retired in may 1980. He was the first certified polygrapher in the state of Iowa. After he retired from the Police Department, he worked security at sports shows for the Jackson Expo Group out of Spirit Lake, Iowa, and for Shamrock Production out of Apple Valley, Minn.
He was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church in Jefferson and was very active in helping the Carmelite nuns. He loved playing cribbage. He built six homes that he lived in.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia of Burbank, S.D.; three children, Barbara J. and Mike Uhl of Mason, Ohio, Curt J. an MelCena Bernard of Yankton, S.D., and Joan M. and Terry Mulvey of Lead, S.D.; a stepson, M. Robert and Jodie O'Keefe of Sioux Falls, S.D.; five grandchildren, Tanya Fischer, Jess Uhl, Theresa McClatchey, Cyrus J. Bernard and Abby Stowers; six great-grandchildren, Ben and Grace, Cameron and Caden and Taylor and Brody; and three sisters, Rachel and Roger Bosse of Elk Point, S.D., Noella Garthwright of Sioux City and Pat and Bob Norton of Sioux City.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Bonnie; a granddaughter, Christa Bernard; and four brothers, Herman, Martin, Hank and Philip Bernard.
