Gene B. Schwedler, formerly of Moville, passed away Dec. 23, 2013, at Correctionville Nursing and Rehab Center in Correctionville, Iowa, following a brief illness.
Services will be 9 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Moville, with the Rev. Barb Spaulding officiating. Private family graveside services will be in Banner Township Cemetery, Lawton, Iowa. Arrangements are under the direction of McCulloch Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home in Moville.
Gene was born on March 29, 1936, to Edwin and Lucille Schwedler. He attended Climbing Hill (Iowa) Elementary School until the sixth grade. He then transferred to the Glenwood State School, where he resided until the age of 16. He then returned home to live on the farm with his parents, a life he truly loved. When his parents retired from the farm, the three of them moved to their new home in Moville.
In 2003, he moved to Correctionville Nursing and Rehab Center with his mother, where he resided up to the time of his death.
Gene never met a stranger and never forgot a face. He loved riding his three wheel bike around Moville for many years, visiting with everyone he met, especially children at the Moville City Park. His favorite hobbies were collecting John Deere toys and memorabilia, of which he had a large collection. He also enjoyed watching the Iowa Hawkeyes, playing cards and listening to country music. One of his favorite things to do every year was to attend the Woodbury County Fair.
Survivors include two sisters, Jan Ortmeier of Milford, Iowa, and Shirley (Pat) McCormick of Sioux City; several nieces and nephews; and Bill King, a close friend at the nursing home. Gene and Bill both came to the nursing home in 2003 and spent the last 10 years there together.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Edwin and Lucille Schwedler; a brother, Jerry Schwedler; and a brother-in-law, Clete Ortmeier.
Pallbearers will be Ryan Hanke, Bill King, Greg Meister, Mike Miller, Kasey Quinlain, and Louie Welch.
The family would like to thank the staff of Correctionville Nursing and Rehab Center who gave him such wonderful devoted care for the last 10 years and Hospice Care Initiatives for their care during the last few weeks.
We will miss you so much, Gene. You were a joy to all who knew you.
