Bernadine L. "Bernie" Wertz, 85, of Sioux City, died Sunday, Jan. 15, 2017, in Sioux City.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Faith United Presbyterian Church, 4327 Morningside Ave., with the Rev. David Koehler officiating. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. today, with family present 6:30 to 8 p.m., at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home, 1801 Morningside Ave.
Bernie was born on April 9, 1931, the daughter of John and Lillian Aronson. She was born and raised on a farm near Charter Oak, Iowa. Bernie started school at age 4 to keep the country school open. Later, she attended Charter Oak School and graduated from Denison (Iowa) High School. She moved to Sioux City to attend beauty salon school.
In 1951, she met the love of her life, Loren, and was married on Oct. 11, 1952. One of Bernie's main attributes was her voice, especially singing. She was a church choir member at age 8. Bernie was a member of several choirs in Sioux City. She was also a Bible School teacher, while raising her own children.
Survivors include her husband, Loren; her three children, Clayton and his wife, Kris, Lori and her husband, Richard, and Bryon; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Burnell.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations will be applied to works of Faith United Presbyterian Church.
Bernie will be missed by everyone who knew her.
