Bernard A. Muth

McCook Lake - Bernard A. Muth, 94, of McCook Lake died Thursday, Feb. 20, 2014, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be 1 p.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with the Rev. Craig Collison officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery at Hawarden, Iowa. Visitation will be noon until service time at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Berkemier Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home.
Bernie was born on Aug. 23, 1919, in Hawarden, Iowa. He was the son of William and Mary (Thinnes) Muth. He was raised in Hawarden and attended school there. He joined the United States Navy in 1938 and served until 1952. He was a boatswains mate and served in the Pacific Theater during World War II.
On Feb. 26, 1946, he married Inez Mae Millage in Hawarden. The couple lived in Sioux City, and then moved to McCook Lake in 1960. Bernard worked for Iowa Public Service for 31 years.
He was active with the Isaac Walton League for many years and helped with the McCook Lake dredging project. He was a lifetime member of the VFW and the Fleet Reserve Association. He was active at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Bernie and Inez were foster parents for 57 children over the years. He loved to tinker with wood and made many toys.
He is survived by a brother, William, of Omaha; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Inez, on March 6, 1989; his parents; two sisters; and five brothers.
Memorials may be given in his name to Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
