Bernice Marie Fitzpatrick, 86, of Sioux City passed away Saturday, May 23, 2015, at a Sioux City nursing home.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church. The Rev. Michael Erpelding will officiate. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., a rosary at 6:30 p.m. and a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., at Larkin Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home.
Bernice was born on Sept. 27, 1928, in Valparaiso, Neb., the daughter of Charles J. and Agnes I (Meduna) Stanislav. She was raised in Nebraska and Iowa and graduated from Hornick (Iowa) High School. Bernice moved to Sioux City in 1945.
On June 12, 1948, she married John J. Fitzpatrick in Sioux City. She worked as a telephone operator for Bell Telephone Company. John passed away on June 17, 1999, in Sioux City.
Bernice was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, where she served on the funeral luncheon committee and was a member of the St. Joseph Guild. She was an honorary Carmelite board member and she also volunteered at the Soup Kitchen. Bernice enjoyed traveling and she and John went on several trips. But what she loved most was spending time with her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She is survived by her daughter, Sandra (Joe) Fries of Davenport, Iowa; three sons, James F. of Sioux City, Thomas J. of Ames, Iowa, and Michael E. (Connie) of Melbourne, Fla.; seven grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; two brothers, Charles (Patricia) Stanislav and Ivan Stanislav; and four sisters, Frances O'Dea, Alice Cederberg, Linda Schroeder and Kathy (Jim) Powell.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two brothers, Leonard and Ben; and four sisters, Rita Horan, Monica Wiggs, Agnes Phister and Mary Virginia Stanislav.
