SIOUX CITY | Bernice M. McCarville, 93, of Sioux City died Sunday, July 1, 2012, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. The Rev. Daniel Guenther will officiate. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home.
Bernice was born in Marcus, Iowa, on Sept. 25, 1918, the daughter of John and Mary (Wettengel) Carey. She was raised in Le Mars, Iowa, and graduated from St. Joseph High School in 1936. She moved to Sioux City after high school and worked at St. Joseph Hospital as a switchboard operator.
On Jan. 18, 1943, she married Thomas McCarville at the Cathedral in Sioux City. Later, she did the bookkeeping for their store, Tommy’s Shoes. Tom died on Jan. 3, 2004 in Sioux City.
Bernice was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and was a former member of the Catholic Daughters of America. She enjoyed fishing, playing pool and cards. She also loved dancing, going to Okoboji, Iowa, and bowling. After they retired, Bernice and Tom enjoyed traveling.
Survivors include four children, Mary and Fred Hauswirth of Sioux City, Ronald and Jacqueline of West Linn, Ore., Connie and Bruce Dvorkin of Sioux City, and Patrick and Linda of Sloan, Iowa; nine grandchildren, Lisa, Deb, Peter, Lucy, Sam, Teena, Kyle, Nolan, and Jessie; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two brothers; and two sisters.
