Bernice D. Newman, 88, of Sioux City went home to her heavenly father on Saturday, June 28, 2008, peacefully following a brief illness.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Daniel C. Guenther of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home. Condolences may be sent online to

Bernice was born May 13, 1920, in Sioux City, to John and Mable (Ferdig) Angerman. She grew up and attended Sioux City schools.
She married Toge Newman on July 22, 1939, in Dakota City. He passed away July 10, 1983 in Sioux City. she was a lifelong resident of Sioux City. She was employed as a waitress at the Biltmore and Palmer House restaurants in Sioux City. She also managed the King Koin Laundry Mat for 13 years and was a office assistant at the Social Security office for a number of years.
She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. She enjoyed family gatherings, social outings, playing cards with family and friends, bingo and always trying her luck at scratch tickets.
Survivors include her children, Michael Wayne and Beverly Newman of Iowa City, Iowa, Marvin Eugene and Sharon Newman of Pella, Iowa, Patricia Ann and Michael Archer of Sioux City, Linda Kay and Rodney Gregg of Sioux City, Toge E. "Butch" and Marsha Newman of Sioux City, Jimmy John Newman and Sue Spence of Le Mars, Iowa, and Susan Ren'e and Steve Klover of Richland, Wash.; 21 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; two siblings, Kenneth Angerman and Mary June Gonzales; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband; two children, twins, Rosemary and Richard Newman; a grandchild; three great-grandchildren; and five siblings.
