Bernie Rae Box (Bernard)

SIOUX CITY -- Bernie Rae Box, 77, of Moline, Ill., formerly of Sioux City, died Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2010 at Trinity Medical Center West, Rock Island, Ill.

Services will be 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Church, Moline, where she was a member. Visitation will be 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Rafferty Funeral Home, Moline.

Additional services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sioux City. Visitation will be one hour before to service time Monday at the church. Burial will be at St. Peter's Cemetery, Jefferson, S.D. Sioux City arrangements are under the direction of Larkin Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home. Condolences may be left at RaffertyFunerals.com.

Bernie Rae was born Nov. 8, 1932, in Sioux City, the daughter of Clarence and Bernadette Fountaine Bernard. She married Frank Box in 1961 in Jefferson, S.D. He preceded her in death.

Bernie started her long career in the hotel business near her hometown in 1953, at the age of 21, at the Warrior Hotel in Sioux City. In later years, after moving to the Quad City area, she was involved in working the hotel front desk and third shift night audit at several hotels including the former LeClaire Hotel in Moline, the Fort Armstrong and the former Rock Island Sheraton Motor Inn, Quality Inns International and the Historic Blackhawk Hotel in Davenport, Iowa. She began her service at the Blackhawk Hotel in 1987, and was still employed to date with the Isle Casino and Hotel, which had formerly owned the Blackhawk Hotel from 2001. She will be deeply missed by her friends, co-workers and others who were lucky enough to be touched by her sincere kindness and warm heart.

Bernie Rae was a member of Sacred Heart Church and National Catholic Society of Foresters Court 956.

Survivors include her brothers, Marcus Bernard of Jefferson, S.D., and Daryl Bernard of Yankton, S.D.; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Buddy Bernard, Jr.
