Bertha Marie Schlotman (Peterson)

LAWTON, Iowa -- Bertha Marie Schlotman, 96, of Lawton died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2008, at the Bickford Cottage in Sioux City.

Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at the Elliott Creek Presbyterian Church in Bronson, Iowa, with Chaplain Lorna Peters officiating. Burial will be in Banner Township Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and prayer service at 7 p.m., at Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel in Sioux City. Bertha was born July 20, 1911, in Missouri Valley, Iowa, the daughter of Lars and Anna (Thomsen) Peterson. She grew up in Missouri Valley and graduated from Missouri Valley High School.

She married Paul Schlotman on Oct. 4, 1930. Together, they farmed in the Missouri Valley area until the early 1950s, when they moved to the Bronson, Iowa area and farmed there. Paul died Aug. 6, 1980. She moved to Lawton in 1983 and to Sioux City in 2004.

She was a member of Elliott Creek Presbyterian Church in Bronson. She enjoyed being on the farm, but her family was the most important thing. She also enjoyed knitting and needle work.

Survivors include six sons and their wives, Stanley and Lavada Schlotman of Brookings, S.D., Glen and Linda Schlotman of Kingsley, Iowa, John and Janice Schlotman of Hornick, Iowa, Earl and Janice Schlotman of Farmington, Minn., Wayne and Diane Schlotman of Bronson, Iowa, and Sam and Linda Schlotman of Bronson; two daughters, Agnes Pierick of Fort Collins, Colo., and Frances and her husband, Duane Edelman of Rosemount, Minn.; two sons-in-law, Kenneth Deen of Brookings, S.D., and Marvin Ahlquist of Sioux City; 36 grandchildren; 89 great-grandchildren; and 16 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Paul Schlotman; two daughters, Dorothy Deen and Edith Ahlquist; a grandson, Jeff Ahlquist; and a sister, Irene Regentz.
