Betty Jane Harbeck (Rasmussen)

Betty Jane (Rasmussen) Harbeck, 86, of Sioux City passed away Friday, Dec. 14, 2007, at her residence.

Services will be 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel, with the Rev. Marvin Mueller officiating. Burial will be in the spring of 2008. Visitation will be 11 a.m. until service time Wednesday at the funeral home. Condolences may be sent online to www.christysmith.com .

Mrs. Harbeck was born Nov. 1, 1921, in Sioux City to Rasmus and Kristina (Nielsen) Rasmussen. She grew up and attended Longfellow Elementary, East Junior and was in the last class to graduate mid-term on Jan. 21, 1940, from Sioux City East High School.

She later attended and graduated from comtometer school which was described as an adding machine, which required special training. She was later employed with Knapp and Spencer from 1940 to 1950. During the war years, she stepped up and took on the responsibilities of others who left to serve in the Armed Services. While at Knapp and Spencer, she met Merle Harbeck also of Sioux City. They were married in June 1950 in the Lutheran faith.

As with many after the war, they migrated to California, where they raised two sons in a home which became filled with wonderful memories of friends and family. The couple returned to Sioux City in 1970. Merle passed away in January 2001.

She was a Cub Scout den mother and a volunteer with the Goodwill for 18 years. She enjoyed quilting, Scrabble and writing letters. She was always proficient corresponding with family and friends. Her home was always warm and welcoming. She had a beautiful soul that will be missed.

Survivors include two sons, Rick and Julia Harbeck of Sioux City and Robert Merle Harbeck of Gilbert, Ariz.; grandchildren, Lucas and Robin Harbeck, Dan Harbeck and Jonathon Harbeck; great-grandchildren, Mackenzie and Gabriel Harbeck; several nieces and nephews; a sister-in-law, Maxine Jensen of Kimberling, Mo.; and a brother-in-law, Kenneth Lewis of Bassett, Neb.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters; and a brother.
