Betty Lund Johnson, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, and cherished friend to many, passed away peacefully on December 15, 2024, surrounded by the love of her family. Her 94 years were a testament to kindness, strength, and unwavering devotion to faith, family, and friends.
Born on October 6, 1930, in Winfred, South Dakota, to Don and Velda Edwards, Betty was the embodiment of resilience and love. She dedicated her life to creating a home where all were welcome—a place filled with warmth, laughter and belonging. Betty was active in her church and a proud supporter of the Shrine, reflecting her strong faith and passion for giving back.
Betty was a woman of boundless kindness and a heart big enough to hold everyone she met. Her fridge, adorned with photos of her extensive family, was a testament to the pride and joy she felt for her children, grandchildren, and extended family. Her home was always open, especially during the holidays offering a haven to friends and loved ones who had nowhere else to go.
On March 3, 1950, Betty married Ernest Lund Junior, and together they raised five children: Gary, Cheri, Laurie, Kathi, and Eric. After Ernie’s passing, Betty married Wayne C. Johnson in 1979. He had four children: Diane, Doug, Don and Denny. Betty’s sister, Bev Johnson of Sun City, Arizona, held a special place in her heart, and their close bond was a source of joy throughout her life.
A true matriarch, Betty balanced her devotion to family with a fulfilling career as a Building Aide in the Sioux City School District, where she left an indelible mark on the lives of countless children. She found joy in her family, faith, friendships, gardening and music.
Betty will be remembered for her loving nature, her strong faith, and her endearing habits: heartfelt hugs, her glowing smile, blowing kisses as loved ones left her door, and her gentle reminder to “be careful.” While she was known to worry, it was always born from her deep love and care for those around her.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Whispering Creek Assisted Living and the Reflections Memory Care Unit for their compassionate care over the last four years, as well as to St. Croix Hospice for their support during Betty’s final months.
A celebration of Betty’s remarkable life will be held at a later date, with details to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to St. Croix Hospice in Betty’s honor, continuing her legacy of kindness and loving care.
Fly high, Betty Boop. Your strength, love, and laughter will live on in all who knew you.
