Bill Orland "Bill" Barbee

NORTH SIOUX CITY -- Bill Barbee, 55, of North Sioux City died Friday, Aug. 27, 2010, at the Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, surrounded by his family.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home. Burial will be in Logan Park Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the U.S. Air Force. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a Masonic service at 7 p.m., at the funeral home. Condolences may be sent online to www.christysmith.com .

Bill was born April 6, 1955, in Sioux City, the son of Wilford and Patricia (Paetz) Barbee. He attended school throughout the Midwest.

He married Kathy James in 1972. That same year, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. He was honorably discharged in 1974. He continued his education at Morningside College, with a double major in criminal justice and psychology. He also received certification in various other aspects of law enforcement.

Bill was a jack of all trades. He was a police chief in Niobrara, Neb., with at Hospe's Music and other music stores in the region. He owned and operated Competition Cycle, Nobody's Guns and Intra-Lex Investigations, which handled state and federal investigations. He also lectured police ethics nationally and internationally.

He was an avid musician and writer. He was adventurous and enjoyed all outdoor activities including hunting, fishing and scuba diving. He also liked traveling and rendezvous. He was a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite, the Abu-Bekr Shrine and a member of their clown unit, aka "Bugsy". He also was a member of the Elk Point, S.D. Masonic Lodge.

Survivors include a son, Billy-Shane Barbee of Minneapolis; a daughter, A. Kortney Barbee and her husband, Matt Carpenter of Sioux City; his father, Wilford Barbee Sr. and his wife, Peggy of Wichita, Kan.; a special friend, Nancy Miller of Sioux City; a sister, Lydia Barbee of Boise, Idaho; and a brother, Michael Barbee of Superior, Wis.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Patricia Barbee; a brother, Loren Barbee; and Kathy.
