George was born to Carroll George and Laura (Shear) Rowe at Hampton, Iowa. He grew up and attended school there, graduating from Hampton High School and later attended Montana State College in Bozeman, Mt., to study engineering.
In 1936, he married Viola Reed in Iowa Falls, Iowa. George worked for the Sioux City-based Council Oak food store chain as a grocer for several years after their marriage, before purchasing an oil station named Mid Continent Oil in Sioux City. He later sold the station to return to the grocery business in Des Moines. George later worked in an ordnance plant in Des Moines at the beginning of the war.
Nearing the end of the war, he joined the U.S. Marines Corps. He was stationed at Guadalcanal and later joined the troops in the Battle of Okinawa. George was transferred to Guam for further training when the war ended. He later served in China before he was honorably discharged from the Marines in 1946. After the war, he returned to Iowa, where he went to work for the Iowa State Highway Commission. While working for the state, he resumed his studies by taking correspondence courses in engineering. In 1955, he earned his engineering license.
Work led him to live in Britt, New Hampton and Ames, Iowa, eventually ending up in Sioux City. He retired from the Iowa Department of Transportation in 1978. After his retirement, he and Viola moved to Mesa, Ariz., where they lived for 22 years. They then returned to Sioux City in 2000 to be closer to family. Viola passed away Feb. 24, 2002.
George's hobbies included golf, fishing and handy-man work. His family meant the world to him, and he was very proud of his military service. He was a former member of the Masonic Lodge at Britt, Iowa.
