Carmen Henrietta Klein (Empen)

LAWTON, Iowa -- Carmen Henriette Klein, 89, of Lawton passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, Aug. 3, 2010, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Bethel Lutheran Church in Lawton, with the Rev. Bruce Jackson officiating. Burial will be in Banner Township Cemetery. Visitation will be 9:30 a.m. until service time Monday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home in Sioux City.

Carmen was born June 20, 1921, in Amrum, Germany, to Carl and Johanne (Henningsen) Empen. She was raised in Germany. At the age of 2, she moved to Lawton with her family and had been a lifelong resident. She attended Banner Township rural school and graduated from Lawton Community School in 1939. She later attended a local business college for two years.

On June 9, 1946, she married Oskar E. Klein in Lawton. He passed away April 4, 2004. She was employed as a bookkeeper for First Trust and Savings Bank. She also was employed at Western Iowa Telephone Company, both in Lawton.

She was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church and was the church organist for 35 years. She enjoyed sewing quilts, the Variety Club in Lawton, traveling, and the Friendship Senior Center. She was a member of the Friday Afternoon Fan Club. She also was very active in church activities. She also enjoyed stamp collecting, spoon collecting and collecting statues of small horses. She traveled to all but four states and nine countries in Europe.

Survivors include two sons, Carl Klein of Omaha, and Eric Klein and his fiancee, Dawn Young of Lawton; a grandchild, Christina Bradley; and a brother-in-law, Kurt and Agnes Klein of Florida.

She was preceded in death by her husband and a daughter-in-law, Deborah Klein.
