Carole J. "Dode" Johnson (Gifford)

April 18, 1939 — June 22, 2009

SIOUX CITY -- Carole "Dode" Johnson, 70, of Sioux City died Monday, June 22, 2009, at her residence surrounded by her loving family, after a lengthy illness.

Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Friday in Graceland Park Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home. Condolences may be sent online to www.christysmith.com .

Carole J. Johnson was born April 18, 1939, in Sioux City, to Elmer and Darlene (Wendt) Gifford. She attended Central High School.

On July 25, 1958, she married Dennis L. Johnson in Sioux City. Denny died Feb. 5, 2000. Over the years, they made their home in Moreno Valley, Calif., Cherokee, Iowa, Indianola, Iowa, San Antonio, Texas, then finally back to Sioux City where their journey began.

She worked for many years in the sporting goods business with her husband in Cherokee and Indianola. She then worked for several years at Westview Care Center in Indianola. While in San Antonio, she was employed by Builders Square and MarTek Communications.

She is survived by a daughter, Dee Johnson of Sioux City; a son and his family, Darrin, Michelle, Kaci and Konner of Indianola; a son and his family, Doug, Judy, Brad, Dean and Jeremiah of Creston, Iowa; a sister, Deb Hamar of Sioux City; brothers-in-law, John Richou, Ed Plumb, Dale, Dean (Joyce), Darryl (Linda) Johnson; sisters-in-law, Marilyn Johnson, Donna (Leon) Kral and Diane (Mike) Himrod; a very special niece, Kelly Anderson of Sioux City; and many other family members and friends.

She was preceded in death by her mother; her father; her sisters, Barbara Plumb and Patsy Richou; brothers-in-law, Darold Hamar and Delmer Johnson; and a sister-in-law, Maxine Johnson.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be directed to Hospice of Siouxland.
