Lawton, Iowa - Carolyn C. Uhl, 67, Lawton, passed away Saturday, April 27, 2013, at a Sioux City hospital, after a 40-year struggle with M.S.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Church of the Nativity in Sioux City, with the Rev. Steve McLoud officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Sioux City. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a vigil service at 7 p.m., at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home in Sioux City.
Carolyn was born Sept. 14, 1945, in Bremerton, Wash., the daughter of Blanche (Newell) and Benjamin Copeland. She came to Sioux City as a child. She graduated from Central High School in 1963. She earned a Bachelor of Arts from Morningside College, and her master's degree from the University of South Dakota.
She worked as a counselor at Fort Dodge (Iowa) Senior High School from 1968 to 1969. She returned to Sioux City and began her career with Sioux City Schools. She worked at Hayworth Junior High, and at Hoover Middle School from 1969 until she retired in 2000.
On July 28, 1972, she married Kenneth Paul Uhl in Sioux City.
Carolyn was named Iowa State Middle School Counselor of the Year in 1969. She received the Apple Award in 2000. She was a finalist for Women of Excellence Award.
Carolyn enjoyed flying, boating, traveling, reading, music, mowing with her garden tractor and taking care of her flowers. The important things in Carolyn's life were her job, working with kids, her church and spending time with her family.
Survivors include her husband, Kenneth P. Uhl; her son, Blake (Noelani) Uhl; grandchildren, Dakota and Jessica Uhl, and Heidi and Lydia Uhl; sister, Linda D. LaPlante; nephew, Michael LaPlante; grandnephew, Bode LaPlante; stepmother, Stella Copeland; stepbrother, Jerry Petersen; brothers- and sisters-in-law, Carol (Mike) Dallen, Keith Uhl, Maureen (Jim) Pearson, Marilyn (Mike) Dennehey, Maurice (Barb) Uhl Jr., Steven (Lisa) Uhl, Alan (Alicia) Uhl, Shari (Ron) Andrews, Dr. Mark (Dr. Jennifer) Uhl and Lisa Uhl; and several nieces and nephews.
