Carroll D. "Cookie" Koch, 81, of Moville passed away Saturday, April 25, 2015, at a Sioux City hospital, surrounded by his children, following a brief battle with cancer.
Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at McCulloch Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home in Moville. Burial will be in Arlington Township Cemetery. A luncheon will be served following the funeral. Visitation with the family will be 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Carroll was born on Oct. 30, 1933, in Hartington, Neb., to Leonard and Esther (Forinash) Koch. He started his life in Nebraska, and at age 12 he moved to the Moville area. He graduated from Moville High School in 1952. He served his country by joining the U.S. Armed Forces in August 1953. He received an honorable discharge in July 1956 as a staff sergeant.
He married the love of his life, Wanda Carter, in July 1956 in Colorado Springs, Colo. They moved to the Moville area in 1958, where they raised their four children. During his life, Carroll did construction with his brothers, worked on farms, and raised turkeys and sheep. But his joy in life came from baling hay. He became The Baler Man and took great pride in his round bales.
Carroll was a strong-hearted, hard-working man, who enjoyed helping others and crafting his wooden toys. He will be deeply missed by many.
He is survived by his four children, Deb and Paul Patterson of Moville, Kila and Tony Meissner of Spencer, Iowa, Barry and Dora Koch of Hornick, Iowa, and Tina Mogensen and her fiance, Ryan McFarland of Moville; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; 10 stepgrandchildren; two brothers, Kenny and Pat Koch of Hawarden, Iowa, and Loren and Sheryl Koch of Kingsley, Iowa; and two sisters, Darlene and Wendel Roling of Rapid City, S.D., and DeEtte and Neil Peck of Sioux City.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Wanda; his parents; a brother; a grandson; and several other relatives and friends.
