Charles Herman Solomon

SIOUX CITY -- Charles Herman Solomon, 87, of Sioux City died Thursday, Dec. 30, 2010, at Sunrise Retirement Community.
Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Whitfield United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Sylvia Kennedy officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., and a 7 p.m. prayer service, at the church. Charles was born July 11, 1923, to John and Elma (Craft) Solomon in Perry Township of Plymouth County, Iowa.
On Aug. 25, 1946, he married L. Frances Andrews in Sioux City. The couple raised three daughters and made Sioux City their home. Frances passed away on March 14, 2003. Charles worked for Allied Laboratories for 15 years, Sioux Bi-Products for 29 years, and later for the Christy-Smith Funeral Home as a funeral assistant before his retirement.
Charles served as a trustee to Concord Township, was a Lawton-Bronson school board member for six years, and was host of "Quartet Times" on KTFC for 34 years. He was active in Interfaith and Crop Walk. Charles was an active member of Whitfield Methodist Church, serving as Sunday school superintendent for 25 years and a peanut sorter for the church's annual peanut brittle fundraiser. His hobbies included playing cards, especially Pitch, playing horseshoe, going fishing, raising horses and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include three daughters, Vickie and Daniel Washburn of Sergeant Bluff, Rhonda and John Pearson of Brandon, Miss., and Valerie and Gary Weikel of Sioux City; seven grandchildren, David Washborn (Trevor Jackman), Amy and Christopher Nilles, Sara Pearson, Nick and Anne Washborn, Mandy Solomon, Lindsay Washburn and fiance, Jeremy McClure and Drew Pearson; seven great-grandchildren, Taylor, Grace, Bella, Avery, Joseph, Cole and Haley; a brother, Darwin Solomon and his wife, Emaline; a sister, Joyce Henkel; a special nephew and niece, Randy and Kathy Solomon; a cousin, Maurine Solomon; and many nieces, nephews and special friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, L. Frances Solomon; parents, Herman and Elma Solomon; parents-in-law, Ed and Dorothy Andrews; two brothers, Darrell Solomon and Donald Solomon; a sister, Edna and her husband, John Mathews; and a brother-in-law, John Williams.
Memorials may be directed to Hospice of Siouxland, Sunrise Retirement or Whitfield Methodist Church.
