Charlotte Hawthorn, 80, of Sioux City and Minneapolis, Minn., passed away Wednesday, June 4, 2008, at her residence following a short illness.

Charlotte Mary Carroll was born on Feb. 6, 1928, near Castana, Iowa, to Russell and Emily (Bouslaugh) Carroll. Charlotte grew up with her grandparents, Dode and Ethel Bouslaugh in Castana, where she attended school. She graduated from Castana High School.

She married Duane "Red" Hawthorn on Oct. 10, 1944, at Grace Methodist Church in Sioux City. She moved with him to Idaho and later to California, when he was in training with the U.S. Navy before he entered World War II in the South Pacific. After Duane entered the war, Charlotte returned to Sioux City, where she attended Morningside College and worked at the T.S. Martin Department Store. When Duane returned from the war, they moved to Ames, where he graduated from Iowa State University.

The couple then returned to Sioux City, where Duane began a career with Iowa Public Service, now MidAmerican Energy. Charlotte and Duane had four children, and Charlotte was involved as a leader in all of her children's activities, including Scouts and countless school clubs and extracurricular activities. She was interested in a wide variety of school and community activities and was widely known in the Sioux City area.

After her husband accepted a position as manager of the Mid Continent Area Power Pool in Minneapolis, the couple purchased a second home in Bloomington, Minn., and for the next 34 years, lived in both cities. She was very active at the condominium where she and Duane maintained their second home, and was responsible for many of the beautiful flowerbeds and the landscaping on the grounds there. The residents of the condominium have planted a tree on the grounds in her honor. She loved flowers and plants and had maintained a greenhouse in Sioux City that they added to their Morningside home for their daughters. She also had a great interest in medical research through her 60-year medical association with Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.

She is survived by her husband, Duane Hawthorn of Sioux City; two daughters, Connie Jo Hawthorn of Jacksonville, Fla., and Susan Jane (John) Adams of Virginia Beach, Va.; her mother, Emily Carroll of Onawa, Iowa; a sister, Dorothy (Dr. Donald) Clark of Westminster, Colo.; two nieces; five nephews; and many other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by two daughters, Barbara Annette and Paulette Jill; her father, Russell Carroll; her mother-in-law and father-in-law, Dr. Horace and Mrs. Hazel (Waples) Hawthorn of Sioux City; and two brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Carl E. Baker and Miriam (Hawthorn) Baker Nye of Moville, Iowa, and Dr. Donald and Clarice (Hawthorn) Watson of Eugene, Ore.

Memorials may be directed to Hospice of Siouxland.
