SIOUX CITY -- Chester Roy Baker, 91, of Sioux City passed away Thursday, June 11, 2009, at a local hospital.
Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Berkemier Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home, with Pastor Merrill Muller of Wesley United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Tilden Cemetery, Tilden, Neb. Visitation will be 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Online condolences can be sent to christy-smith.com.
Chester was born on March 26, 1918, in Avon, S.D., to Mr. and Mrs. Frank Baker. As a young child, the family moved to Tilden, Neb. He grew up and attended school in the Tilden area. He later married Margaret Real in Norfolk, Neb. in 1942. The couple resided in the Tilden area until 1959, when they moved to the Siouxland area and had resided here ever since. Margaret passed away in 1994 in Sioux City. Chester was employed as a truck driver for Barber Transportation and then later with Sioux Transportation.
He was of the Protestant faith. He enjoyed golfing and gardening. Chester also enjoyed sharing conversations with friends at the D.A.V. in Riverside.
Survivors include his children, Sally and James Mayer of Melbourne Beach, Fla., Keith and Sheryl Baker of Sioux City, and Tom Baker and Helen Buckholtz of North Sioux City, S.D.; eight great-grandchildren; a sister, Evelyn of Columbus, Neb.; a daughter-in-law, Phyllis Baker; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife; a son, Chester Baker; two grandsons, Scott Mayer and Chad Seiger; a granddaughter, Sara Jean Baker; and a great-grandson, Tyler Turnquist.
