SIOUX CITY | Clair William "Bill" Simons, 62, of Sioux City passed away unexpectedly Sunday, Oct. 21, 2012, at a Rock Island, Ill., hospital.
Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Sylvia Kennedy of Rustin Avenue United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 3:30 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present at 6 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the funeral home.
Bill was born on July 17, 1950, in Sioux City, to Clair and Bernadine (Bobzin) Simons. He grew up and graduated from high school in Elk Point, S.D. He later attended Metro Community College and Bellevue University. He resided in Lincoln, Neb., Papillion, Neb., Lawrence, Kan., and returned to Sioux City in 1984.
He married Denise L. Akers on May 7, 1977, in Randolph, Neb. This past spring, they celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary. Bill was employed with Wiess and Newman Shoes, the Half Price Store, Hawkeye Wine and Spirits, Gateway and, most recently, First Financial Bank.
He was a member of Rustin Avenue United Methodist Church, where he sang in the choir. He loved riding his motorcycle, fishing, going up to the river, talking with everybody, enjoying a good glass of wine and he was always up to a joke. He served as an assistant Scout master and soccer coach for his boys. He was an avid Nebraska Cornhusker and New York Yankees fan. Most of all, he was a family man.
Survivors include his wife, Denise of Sioux City; sons, Christopher Simons and Jessica Laake of Polk City, Iowa, and Patrick Simons and Kayla Malecek of Sioux City; sisters, Jane and Charles Forman of Apollo Beach, Fla., and Tracy and Dan Wyatt of Woodward, Okla.; his mother-in-law, Yvonne Akers of Platte Center, Neb.; a sister-in-law, Cindy and Ted Wemhoff of Platte Center; a brother-in-law, Brian and Jodi Akers of Ashland, Neb.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Linda Johnson; father-in-law, John Akers; and a daughter-in-law, Catherine Simons.
