Clayton LeRoy Schuck

September 15, 1941 — February 13, 2017

Clayton L. Schuck, 75, of Sioux City, died Monday, Feb. 13, 2017, at a Sioux City hospital.
Memorial services will be 11:30 a.m. Saturday at St. John Lutheran Church. Visitation will be 10:30 a.m. until service time Saturday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home.
Clayton LeRoy "Clay" Schuck was born in 1941, to Wendell and Phyllis (Heckert) Schuck, in Spencer, Iowa, where he was raised. He was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church, where he was an active member. Clay graduated in May 1959 from Spencer High School.
After graduation, Clay enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. He served his country for four years in Japan and Florida. Clay was honorably discharged, having attained the rank of airman first class, from Patrick Air Force Base in Florida.
After Clay's service, he moved to Phoenix, Ariz. to live near his parents and three siblings. While living there, he complete a two-year associate's degree in organic chemistry at Phoenix Junior College. Later, Clay took a building inspector's course at the International Conference of Building Officials (ICBO) in California. He returned to the Phoenix area, where he worked as a building inspector for Maricopa County for about 40 years.
In his free time, Clay enjoyed hunting, flying, photography, and exploring Arizona, as well as his love of his many dogs. He also was an avid engraver, working on projects from gun stocks to tie tacks. Clay was a talented tennis player and taught the sport. He was also very good at telling a joke with a straight face.
Clay and his wife, Helen Flugum, married in their later years on Nov. 20, 2004. They were high school classmates, and they re-met 45 years after their high school graduation. Clay even remembered that Helen had worn a pink dress on their graduation evening. They made their retirement home in Sioux City.
Clay attended Our Savior's Lutheran Church and later he became a member of St. John Lutheran Church, where he enjoyed helping his wife make quilts for Lutheran World Relief (LWR).
Clay in survived by the love of his life, his wife, Helen of Sioux City; his sister, Sandi (Chuck) Weschler of Phoenix; his brother-in-law, Ron Flugum of Anchorage, Alaska; as well as other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Mike and Tom.
