Conrad Kennedy Cameron

SIOUX CITY -- Conrad K. Cameron, 83, of Sioux City passed away Sunday, April 11, 2010, at a Sioux City hospital following a brief illness.

Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Harold Werley officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 10 a.m. until service time Friday at the funeral home. Condolences may be sent online to christysmith.com.

Conrad Kennedy Cameron was born Oct. 28, 1926, to Sam and Rowena (Steklenburg) Cameron, in Sioux City. He was a graduate of Sergeant Bluff-Luton Schools. Conrad served in the U.S. Navy from February 1945 to July 1946. While in the Navy, Conrad completed submarine schooling in New London, Conn., and served on the USS Argonout.

Conrad and Bonnie Certain were married in Sergeant Bluff on Aug. 15, 1948. The couple were married 58 years before Bonnie's passing in 2006.

After being released from the Navy, Conrad attended the University of Northern Iowa and then earned his bachelor's degree from Morningside College in 1951. He received his master's degree from the University of South Dakota in 1961. Conrad served 37 years as a teacher, coach and building administrator. He began his education career as a high school teacher and coach at Little Rock and Akron, Iowa. He began his employment in the Sioux City Community School District in 1957. He taught math at East Junior High School for six years. He then served as principal at M.G. Clark and Roosevelt Elementary Schools before being named the first principal of the new Nodland Elementary School in 1967. He remained at Nodland until 1977, when he was named principal of Riverside Junior High School. In 1979, he returned to East Junior High School as the principal and retired as building administrator of East Middle School in 1989.

Con's hobbies included fishing, spending time at the lake home in Yankton, S.D., and traveling with Bonnie. Spending time with his family and especially his grandchildren, gave him great pleasure. Conrad's family would like to especially thank the close family friends for their support during this difficult time.

Conrad is survived by son, Britt and wife, Cristy Cameron of West Des Moines; daughter, Kim and husband, Brian Barnes of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; grandchildren, Beau and Ben Barnes of Tampa, Fla., and Nick, Quinn and Shay Cameron of West Des Moines; great-grandchild, Ayden Rist; and brothers, Jerry "Dutch" and Gary Cameron of Salix, Iowa.

Conrad was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Bonnie in 2006; and son, Brad in 2000.
