Gerda (Hedda) Dekker of South Sioux City passed away Wednesday, January 4, 2023, at Azria Health Regency Square. Burial services will be at a later date.
Hedda was born May 6, 1936 in Rotterdam, Netherlands. She was educated in the Netherlands and studied in the languages of Dutch, French, English, and German. The Dekker family was active in the Underground network secretly battling the Nazis during World War II and Hedda carried many messages from house to house.
Hedda had lived in New Zealand and traveled to the United States with a friend. Hedda became a United States citizen in 1971.
Hedda called Regency Square her home for a number of years. She was a warrior against her diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis.
She is survived by her brother, Peter (Joke) of the Netherlands. Many nieces, nephews, and friends of the Netherlands, Denmark, and Germany. Hedda is also survived by the family of Andrea Conrad and many friends including special friends, Rabbi Solbin, Rabbi Green, and Gerald Weiner.
Thanks to the special staff that Hedda called her dear friends at Regency, thank you for your thoughtfulness and kindness.
