Sioux City - Dallas Duane Lahrs, 61, of Sioux City passed away Saturday, Oct. 12, 2013, at the Sioux Falls, S.D., VA Medical Center after a long battle with a neurological disorder.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home. Graveside services will be in Dakota City Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Dallas Duane was born on Aug. 27, 1952, to Dallas M. Lahrs and Geraldine (McManigal) Lahrs. He was raised in northeast Nebraska and Sioux City.
He served in the United States Navy aboard the USS St Louis, in the southeast Pacific during the Vietnam War. Upon his discharge, he studied social work at Briar Cliff University. He also graduated from Western Iowa Tech Community College. He worked for Missouri Valley Steel for many years.
In his free time, he enjoyed bingo, bicycling, camping, kayaking, motorcycling, road trips, reading, following railroading, and playing tennis. He also enjoyed the Legion’s Fish Fry in Homer, Neb., and planned to volunteer upon retirement.
Survivors include a sister, Pam Lahrs and brother-in-law, Colin Jordan of Portland, Ore.; brother, Daryl Lahrs of Bronson, Iowa; nephews, Nick and his wife, Courtney Lahrs of Bronson, Nate and his wife, Amy Lahrs of Lawton, Iowa, and Nelson Lahrs of Bronson; grandnieces, Peyton, Paige, and Sydney; grandnephew, Carter; aunts, Colleen Hayes of Oakland, Neb., Kathleen and her husband, Ray Rowe of Sioux City, and Bonnie Gupta of Sebastopol, Calif.; an uncle, Dennis and his wife, Dodie McManigal of Dakota City; and many special cousins, great friends, and wonderful coworkers.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister-in-law, Babette (Perley) Lahrs; aunts, Connie (Lahrs) Lindahl, and Judy (McManigal) Newman; uncles, Laurence Lindahl and Mike McManigal and his widow, Pam (McManigal) Davis; and cousin, Ben Gupta.
