SIOUX CITY -- Darwin E. Sturtevant, 73, of Sioux City passed away Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2010, at Touchstone Living Center.

Darwin Eugene Sturtevant was born on July 19, 1937, to Jay and Sylvia (Donnell) Sturtevant in Sioux City. Darwin attended schools in Sioux City, McCook Lake, S.D., and Jefferson, S.D. public schools.
Darwin and Patty Lou Thayer were married on Oct. 21, 1960, in Sioux City. Darwin served in the Iowa National Guard and was transferred to the U.S. Navy and served his entire enlistment aboard the USS Fremont as a boiler man.
After his discharge from the Navy, he continued working as a boiler man for Sioux City schools, Stockyard Steam, St. Luke's and finally at Mercy Hospital, where he worked for 27 years, retiring in 2002.
Darwin was an Immersed Baptized member of the Morningside Church of Christ on Garretson Street. He was a member of the Sioux City Camera Club, Siouxland Barber Shop Chorus, Merrill Antique Machinery Club, VFW Post 1972 and the Siouxland Center for the Active Generations. He was also active with Cub Scout Pack 216 of Lowell schools from the 1960s to the 1980s. In his spare time he enjoyed the waterways, traveling, photography and playing his guitar and accordion.
Darwin is survived by his wife, Patty of Sioux City; son, Tom and wife, Debbie of Knob Noster, Mo.; and grandsons, Tommy and Timothy.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Gladys; and foster child Timothy W.
