David Lee Johnson, 69, of Jefferson, passed away Tuesday, April 11, 2017, at the VA Medical Center in Sioux Falls, S.D.
Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Berkemier Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Dave was born on Aug. 22, 1947, in El Dorado, Kan. Dave and his brother, Kenny, were adopted in 1954 by John and Emma (Switchfigure) Johnson and they resided in El Dorado. Dave enlisted in the U.S. Army on March 3, 1965 and earned the Bronze Star and Purple Heart during his service to the United States while in Vietnam. Dave was honorably discharged as a private on March 1, 1968.
He was united in marriage to Doreen Steeg on Aug. 24, 1968 in North Sioux City. The couple had three sons.
Dave liked watching TV and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. Dave also enjoyed researching and learning about gold prospecting and lost treasures.
Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Doreen Johnson of Jefferson; sons, Duane (Michille) Johnson of Vermillion, S.D., Brian (Crista) Johnson of Jefferson, and John (Meghan) Johnson of Burbank, S.D.; and seven grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Kenneth Duane Johnson; stepbrother, Melvin Pettyjohn; father-in-law, Lowell Steeg; and mother-in-law, Christine Steeg.
