David Frank Krom

March 15, 1945 — May 17, 2013

Sioux City - David Frank Krom, 68, of Sioux City died Friday, May 17, 2013, at his home after a several-months illness.
Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Redeemer Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Russell Senstad officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Banner Township Cemetery at Lawton, Iowa. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., and a prayer service being said at 7 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home.
David was born on March 15, 1945, in McGregor, Iowa. He was the son of Frank and Esther (Funk) Krom. He was raised in Sioux City and graduated from East High School in 1963. He played the tuba in the East high School Marching Band. After high school he joined the U.S. Navy and served two tours in Vietnam. He was with the Seabees and spent most of his time in the Da Nang area building base camps for the arriving soldiers.
He married Arlene Wingert on Oct. 22, 1966, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Sioux City. The couple lived in Bronson, Iowa, for 11 years before returning to Sioux City. David worked as a welder and fabricator for FIMCO and Sabre Industries for many years. He later was an over-the-road trucker for Marx Trucking.
He was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church and was the head usher for the Easter Sunrise Service for many years. He was a lifetime member of the V.F.W. Post 1973. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and was very proud of the 31-inch walleye that he caught. David had his own smokehouse and would make sausage, bacon, deer jerky and smoked deer meat. He was active in scouting with both of his boys.
David had a love for his family and a special place in his heart for his two granddaughters and, of course, his two dogs. He was very social and helpful to everyone he met and was always willing to lend a hand, a tool or a ride.
He had a passion for old John Deere tractors and just loved to hear the old two cylinders run. His true passion was the outdoors, camping and fishing in Platte Creek, S.D., where he and Arlene and the dogs spent the entire summer. He had become a "summer local" to the friends he made at Platte. In between the wind, raindrops and even sometimes the snow, you could find him on the deck visiting with friends, in the boat on the lake or mowing and grooming the grass at the campground that he helped manage and maintain. During the winter months, he had routine coffee stops that he would frequent with a good group of friends. David will be missed by the many that knew him well.
Survivors include his wife, Arlene; two sons, Mike and Lisa Krom of Sioux City, Aaron Krom of Sioux City; two granddaughters, Kayla and Kelsey Krom; his two dogs, Lady and Ellie; a brother-in-law and his wife, Al and Colleen Wingert; sisters-in-law, Joyce Wingert and Elaine Calkins; special fishing and camping friends, Harlan and Mary Feddersen, Tom and Kathy Millar; aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers-in-law, Roland and Robert Wingert and Lee Calkins.
