SIOUX CITY -- David O. Lenzen, 66, of Sioux City passed away Monday, Sept. 13, 2010, at his residence following a lengthy disease, with his wife and daughter by his side.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, with the Rev. Merlin J. Schrad officiating. A celebration of life service and visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a vigil service at 7 p.m., at Larkin Northside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Homes.
David was born Sept. 28, 1943, in Hartington, Neb., the son of Anton and Hilda (Jilg) Lenzen. The family moved to Sioux City in the 1950s. He graduated from Heelan High School in Sioux City in 1961. He served in the U.S. Army Reserve.
He married Janice R. Fischer on Oct. 17, 1981, in Sioux City.
He was employed for a brief time at Bomgaars. He worked as a machinist for Sioux Tools and Snap-On Tools Co. for 35 years, retiring in 2002. Upon retirement, he worked part time periodically in the maintenance department as a "professor of cleanliness" at Briar Cliff University.
He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. He enjoyed tinkering with cars, the outdoors and being a West High prop dad. Above all, he was a devoted husband, father and grandpa to Zoe (Karie's puppy).
Survivors include his wife, Janice R. Lenzen of Sioux City; his daughter and her best friend, Karie E. Lenzen and Shannon Murphy of Omaha, Neb.; his mother, Hilda Visnow of Sioux City; three sisters, Bonnie Brown of Farmers Ranch, Texas, Carol Even and her husband, Jim, of Port Clinton, Ohio, and Sandy Berger and her husband, John, of Sioux City; a brother, Danny Lenzen and his wife, Sherry, of Sioux City; a grand puppy, Zoe; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Anton Lenzen; his stepfather, Maury Visnow; and his best friend, Rags.
Pallbearers will be Mike Rooney, Ron Wayman, Robert Al Wells, Kenny Ash, Shannon Murphy, John Johnson and Brandon Hamann.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family for research for Wegeners Granulomatosis and ALS.
