David Alan Yoder

SIOUX CITY -- David A. Yoder, 56, of Sioux City passed away Sunday, May 3, 2009, at a Sioux City hospital.

Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Morningside Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Kevin Lee officiating. Private family graveside services will be held. Visitation will be 3:30 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home. Condolences may be sent online to www.christysmith.com .

David was born April 14, 1953, in Ottumwa, Iowa, to Raymond Otto and Joan (Hill) Yoder. He lived in the areas of Arvada, Colo., and Jewell, Iowa Falls, Hampton, Cleghorn and Cherokee, Iowa, before moving to Huron south of Oakville, Iowa, in 1963.

He graduated from Mediapolis High School in 1970. He attended the University of Iowa, where he earned a bachelor's degree in journalism and computer science. He earned a master's degree in journalism from the University of Iowa in 1990.

He worked for five years as a computer programmer for the University of Iowa. His first journalism job was at the Perry Daily Chief, where he became editor in 1983. He became editor of the Cherokee Daily Times in 1985. He joined the copy desk of the Sioux City Journal in October 1987. He was a longtime columnist for the Chief and the Journal.

On Oct. 18, 1986, he married Kathy Ann Aduddell at the Church of the Land in Des Moines. They have one son, Ethan.

He was a member of the Sioux City Newspaper Guild. He was a member of Morningside Lutheran Church. He was an instrumental guitarist and proud of his chili.

Survivors include his wife, Kathy of Sioux City; a son, Ethan of Sioux City; his mother, Joan Smith of Mediapolis, Iowa; a brother, Don Yoder of Dayton, Ohio; a sister, Kathie and Robert Redlinger of Anchorage, Alaska.

He was preceded in death by his father in 1977.
