South Sioux City - Dean Wix Horner, 92, of South Sioux City, former Sioux City resident, died Thursday at a Sioux City hospital
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, with the Rev. Merlin Schrad officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., and a parish vigil service being said at 7 p.m., at the Larkin Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home.
Dean was born on Dec. 20, 1919, on a farm near Davenport, Neb. He was the son of Harry and Maude (Way) Horner. He graduated from the Shickley (Neb.) High School in 1937. Dean served in the Army Signal Corps from 1942 to 1946 and saw service in the European Theater. He was awarded a Bronze Star. He was recalled to active duty for one year during the Korean War.
On Nov. 8, 1947, he married Virginia Kerr in Columbus, Neb. The family lived in several towns in Nebraska while Dean worked for the Northwestern Bell Telephone Co. They moved to Sioux City in 1961. He retired in 1982 after 35 years with the company.
He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and had been a former member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers. Dean enjoyed helping his children and grandchildren buy and maintain cars. He also enjoyed attending his children and grandchildren’s sporting events. He was a strong family man who taught his children determination, perseverance and Christian values. People fondly remember Dean as a man with meticulous habits and an organized nature.
He will be lovingly remembered by his loving wife of 65 years, Virginia; his daughters and their husbands, Mary Jean and Ron Lewis of Lee’s Summit, Mo., Carolyn and Doug Dykstra of Rogers, Ark., and his sons and their wives, Steve and Caron Horner of Westminster, Colo., and Mike and Claudia Horner of South Sioux City; 11 grandchildren, Shelley Takuwa, Kelliann Dykstra, Cindy Hansen, Stephanie, Matthew and Michael Horner, Grace, Olivia, Madeline, George and John Horner; and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Barbara; and a brother, Donald.
