Sioux City - Dean A. Potter, 78, of Merriam, Kan., formerly of Sioux City, passed away Sunday, April 13, 2014, at Kansas City Hospice House.
Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home in Sioux City, with the Rev. Paul Andell officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, with military rites. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with a Masonic and Eastern Stars service at 7 p.m., at the funeral home.
Dean was born on June 2, 1935, in Sioux City, to Henry Walter and Esther Pearl (Spencer) Potter. Dean graduated from Central High School in 1953.
He married Elizabeth Zublis on Feb. 2, 1957, in Sioux City. Dean served in the U.S. Naval Reserve for 27 years and retired as a chief machinery repairman. Dean participated in the Naval Reserve Sea Cadet Program. He was employed at Younker's, Haakenson Rowe, Carl Anderson Co., Ralph’s Auto, Salsness Buick, and Condon Auto.
Dean was a member of Morningside Lutheran, Morningside Lodge AF & AM 615, Scottish Rite, Abu Bekr Shrine and served as Wagonmaster of Shrine Camping Unit, and past Patron Morningside OES 502.
Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth "Betty" Potter of Merriam; daughter, Louise (Tim) Hafits of Merriam; son, Allen (Maikki) Potter of Sioux City; and grandsons, Jaakko Henry Potter, Bryan James Hafits, and Carl Robert Potter.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Lloyd Potter; and sister, Naomi Erickson.
